In hospital or in the hospital

What is the difference?
Hospital can be a noun which refers to the place like the office, in this instance we use 'the'. If we want to refer to hospital as an abstract noun (referring to what happens in hospital like work) we don't use the article. The same can be said for 'church' 'school' and 'university' among other words for places where things happen.

Thank you for your concise explanation.By the way,in this instance,we call the noun with the definite article a concrete noun.In 'go to the hospital',hospital is a concrete noun which refers to a building itself.
